Prolapse simply means displacement from the normal position. When this word is used to describe the female organs, it usually means bulging, sagging or falling. It can occur quickly, but usually happens over the course of many years. On average, 11 percent of women will undergo surgery for this condition. Symptoms include a bulging or heavy sensation in the vagina that worsens by the end of the day or during bowel movements. Many women don’t seek treatment until they actually feel something protruding outside of their vagina.

Urinary incontinence is the involuntary loss or leakage of urine.  It is a very common condition affecting at least 10-20 percent of women under age 65 and up to 56 percent of women over age 65. While incontinence also affects men, it occurs much more commonly in women.
Urinary incontinence is a symptom, not a disease.  This means that there are many possible causes of it.  The key to treatment is identifying the specific type of incontinence (which may be more than one) through a careful history and physical examination.  It is sometimes necessary to perform a special test called urodynamics to diagnose the problem. If considering surgical correction, urodynamics is frequently used for assessment.
The two most common types of incontinence are stress and urge.

It is urine leakage that happens with activity.  The activity causes pressure or “stress” on the bladder.  Certain activities that are commonly associated with stress incontinence are laughing, lifting, coughing, sneezing, or exercise.

It is leakage of urine that occurs before a woman has a chance to get to the bathroom in response to an urge to urinate.  Women with this type of leakage may also experience frequent urges to urinate and frequent nighttime waking to urinate.

Prolapse and incontinence frequently occur together. Both conditions are believed to result from damage to the pelvic floor after delivering a baby. Other possible factors include heavy lifting on a daily basis, chronic coughing, severe constipation and obesity.

Pelvic floor muscles – A group of muscles in the pelvis that support and help control the vagina, uterus, bladder, urethra and rectum
Bladder – A muscular organ which stores urine
Ureters – A pair of tubes, each leading from one of the kidneys, to the bladder
Urethra – A short, narrow tube that carries urine from the bladder out of the body
Voiding – Passage of urine out of the body

One of the biggest things I like to communicate to patients is that if something hurts, is bothersome or affects their quality of life, we are here to listen. Associates in Urogynecology offers patients a place they can feel comfortable sharing their concerns, and hopefully it is an issue we can help them with. Not every woman’s problem is something they have to live with for the rest of their life.

Dr Sarah St Louis listens very carefully and accesses your concerns with care. She has a great bedside manner and talks to you with respect and concern walking you through the treatment. I had been to two other doctors prior and only had temporary relief. Dr St Louis diagnosed me on the first visit, ordered some additional testing to confirm her diagnosis and within a couple of weeks I was feeling better. Her staff is wonderful and caring also. 5 stars for them all!
